Waikiki Meatballs

1 1/2 pounds ground chuck
1 T. shortening
2 cups cracker crumbs
2 T. cornstarch
1/3 cup minced onions
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg
13 1/2 oz. can pineapple tidbits, drained. Reserve juice
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/3 cup vinegar
1/4 tsp ginger
1 T. soy sauce
1/4 cup milk
1/3 cup chopped green pepper
Mix ground beef, cracker crumbs, onion, egg, salt, ginger and milk. Shape into balls and brown in the melted shortening. Remove meatballs; keep warm. Pour fat from skillet. Mix cornstarch and brown sugar, stir in reserved pineapple syrup, vinegar and soy sauce until smooth. Pour into skillet and cook over medium, stirring constantly until mixture thickens and boils. Reduce heat and add meatballs, pineapple tidbits and green pepper. Heat thoroughly. Serve over warm rice.
